Pacific Life was started in San Francisco in 1868. Its first life insurance policy was issued to a man named Leland Stanford. He was Pacific Life's first president — and the founder of Stanford University.
In 1885 Pacific Life also began offering accident insurance. By the early 1900s, it had merged with another life insurance company. But in 1906, an earthquake that devastated San Francisco nearly destroyed the company. After the dust from the earthquake had settled, Pacific Life's board of directors voted to move the company to Los Angeles.
After nearly 140 years, Pacific Life is one of the top providers of life insurance in the country. Pacific Life's client base includes almost half of the 100 largest companies in the United States.
