Finding Health Insurance For Your Family

Protecting your family’s health is a number one priority. Unfortunately the price tag on most health insurance policies complicates things. So how do you find a policy that will meet your family’s needs without emptying your bank account?

The best way to find affordable family health insurance is to shop around and compare offers from several agents. And InsureLane makes it easy. Before you jump in and start talking to agents, it’s helpful to have an idea of what your options are.

Health Insurance Options For Families

When you’re looking to insure your entire family, you have two options.

Individual policies for everyone. With this option, everyone gets their own policy. Generally, this option is more expensive. But if one member of your family has a chronic condition, it might be more affordable to get them their own plan.

Group coverage for your entire family. In group coverage, multiple people are covered under one policy. For most families, this option costs less. But it isn’t available in all circumstances.

Besides these two broad categories, there are different kinds of plans. These include:

  • PPO Plans. Preferred Provider Organization plans are very common, and offer flexible coverage. PPO plans will provide some coverage for expenses from almost any healthcare provider. But you’ll see the most savings when you get care from a doctor or hospital within the plan’s Provider Organization, or “network.” Many families choose this option.
  • HMO Plans. Health Maintenance Plans are the other very common plan type for families. HMO plans are less flexible than PPOs. With an HMO, you have to use a doctor or hospital within the plan network to have any coverage. HMOs have the advantage of lower out-of-pocket costs, and they often have no deductible.
  • POS Plans. Point of Service plans offer the managed care savings of an HMO plan, along with traditional Indemnity benefits that allow you to see doctors outside the plan’s network. In a POS plan, you typically see a “Primary Care Physician” for most care. You have the option to choose the provider of your choice when you need specific benefits. But the benefits are reduced when you go outside the network.
  • FFS Plans. Fee For Service plans are traditional, or “Indemnity” health care plans. In an FFS plan you can see any doctor you’d like, and the insurance company reimburses you for the cost of care. This was once the most common kind of health insurance plan. Today, “conventional” health insurance plans like these account for less than 7% of the total plans in effect.
